Scientific Art par excellence: Dunn School members showcase their artistic talent

“Where the world ceases to be the scene of our personal hopes and wishes, where we face it as free beings admiring, asking and observing, there we enter the realm of Art and Science.” – Albert Einstein

A Science and Art competition was held for the first time on 21st June 2018 for researchers based at the Dunn School of Pathology. The event, organised by the Graduate Student Association (GSA), was aimed at encouraging scientists to communicate their research in various ways and proved to be an excellent day for art-loving scientists. Artistic depiction of the Dunn School legacy, the path of a cell in the flow cytometer resembling the mysterious black hole, enigmatic digital artworks representing neuronal networks and aesthetic 3D sculptures, including microfluidic-based portraits on plates, an interactive piece and “scientific” cufflinks and jewellery, were amongst the entries for the first edition of the Science and Art competition.

The competition was open to all staff and students based in the Dunn School department and entries were invited for 3 different categories: 2D, 3D and digital art. The event showcased the artistic talent of the participants and in particular, their ability to communicate science through art. The entries were captivating to the eyes as well as thought-provoking. The exhibition was displayed all day for everyone at the department to marvel at, and to vote for their favourite piece of art for a “Public’s Choice” prize. The entries will be judged anonymously by a panel of judges and will be evaluated based on the scientific relevance, effective artistic representation, aesthetics and technique used by the scientific artist.

The GSA Science & Art competition proved to be a great success, with an interesting variety of styles and influences encompassing most areas of scientific research within the Dunn school. It was humbling to see how much talent we have within the department and a pleasure to have been involved in showcasing it.”, said the GSA committee. The winner of the 2018 Science and Art competition will be announced at the Graduate Student Symposium, to be held on 29th June 2018 at the Medical Sciences Teaching Centre, University of Oxford. As the GSA slogan goes “Let the best work of Scientific Art win!”.
