Bernadeta Dadonaite wins young scientist oral presentation award

Bernadeta Dadonaite, a DPhil student in the Fodor group, has been awarded the best oral presentation award by a young scientist, at the European Scientific Working group on Influenza (ESWI) Conference in Riga, 10 -13 September 2017.

The award for her talk, titled: “Analysis of the higher order RNA structures present inside the Influenza A virus genome” highlights the importance of effectively communicating scientific research; an important ability throughout a scientist’s career.

Professor Fodor said: “This award is a fantastic achievement for Bernadeta; fully deserved. She is addressing one of the most difficult questions in the influenza virus field which is how the influenza virus RNA genome is structured and how the virus ensures that it packages exactly one of each of the eight genome segments. Bernadeta has made remarkable progress; her findings might help us predict which influenza strains have the potential to reassort to create potentially deadly new pandemic strains”

Head of Department, Matthew Freeman said: “Bernadeta’s award is a glowing commendation for her future career.”

To accompany her award certificate Bernadeta has received free registration, travel and accommodation for the next ESWI conference in 2020.
