Natasha Gromak, who has become Professor of RNA Biology, is a leader in the study of RNA biology related to neurological disease. She has carved out a niche around RNA:DNA hybrid R-loops in neurodegenerative disorders with a recent focus on the specific molecular mechanisms that underlie devastating triplet repeat expansion disorders like Friedreich’s Ataxia and Huntington’s Disease. Her work also has relevance to many other diseases, including cancer.

Anthony Roberts, who has become Professor of Biochemistry, is a leader in exploring the fundamental biology of the cytoskeleton and molecular motors. His influential work describing the structure of the dynein-2 motor complex and its assembly into ‘trains’ and ‘carriages’ that carry cargoes along cilia and flagella has rewritten the textbook understanding of the molecular mechanisms of intraflagellar transport.

Head of the Dunn School Matthew Freeman said he was “delighted with this hugely deserved success. Natasha and Anthony are both not only outstanding scientists and teachers, but they also exemplify the Dunn School’s aim to make discoveries in fundamental biology that will lead to future medical breakthroughs.”

Professor Gromak said: “I am honoured to receive this title. It is a wonderful recognition of our team’s hard work, and an achievement that would not have been possible without the contributions of past and present team members, as well as our many collaborators. I am deeply grateful for the support I have received at the Dunn School and Trinity College over the years, and I feel very fortunate to teach such outstanding medical students and work with great colleagues.”

Professor Roberts said: “I am delighted and honoured to be awarded this title. I see it as recognition of the exceptional people I have had the privilege to work with over the years, especially my research group, whose curiosity and dedication drive our discoveries. It also reflects the support I have received from my former supervisors and mentors, the Dunn School, Lincoln College, and the Berrow Foundation.”
