Matthew Freeman, Head of Department, is to receive the Novartis Medal and Prize from the Biochemical Society in 2015.
The award is in recognition of the transformative contributions of his research to the field of biochemistry (in particular regulated proteolysis), membrane trafficking, signal transduction and developmental cell biology. Matthew’s research is primarily focused on how cells communicate with each other, as well as the biological and medical consequences of this signalling between cells.
Matthew said: ‘’I am honoured to have been awarded the Novartis Medal and Prize. None of us do science in order to win prizes, but recognition by our peers is a great reward, and I am thrilled to have been chosen to join such an eminent list of past winners. Of course, the prize equally highlights the fantastic people who have worked in my group over many years, and I am very grateful to all of them.’’
Matthew will give a lecture and be presented with the Novartis Medal at the Biochemical Society conference in 2015.
Professor Anne Dell, Chair of the Awards Committee said: ‘’The Biochemical Society’s Awards recognise scientists at all career stages, across the full spectrum of the molecular biosciences. The award lectures in 2015 will showcase the outstanding contributions that the winners have made.’’
Matthew’s lecture will be published in the journal Biochemical Society Transactions with payment of £3,000 from the prize fund.
