Children wowed about DNA during Dunn School led science workshops

Local school children have been wowed by the wonders of DNA during workshops led by a Dunn School researcher as part of British Science Week (13 – 22 March).

Dr Sue Mei Tan-Wong from the Proudfoot group delivered two workshops at St Nicholas Primary School in Old Marston in Oxford on 18th March.

By using cells from their own cheeks year 5s were able to see their own DNA and said how cool and amazing this was.

Pupil Nadir Rahoman said: ‘‘seeing our own DNA, it was so cool. I was amazed to see my DNA. It was great to have you and it was the best workshop in the week.''

Year 3s enjoyed conducting an experiment to extract DNA from strawberries to learn about its characteristics.

One child said: ‘'I learnt that adults pass on their DNA to their children. Extracting DNA from strawberries was really good fun!’’
