Carlota Recio Cruz awarded a postdoctoral fellowship to return to Spain

Dr Carlota Recio Cruz initially joined Professor David Greaves’ lab as a short-term PhD visitor, and was subsequently recruited as a fully-fledged Postdoc in 2016. Her research has since focused on studying the connections between immunometabolism –metabolism linked to immune function– and diseases such as diabetes and vascular disorders, in which she gained important expertise during her PhD studies in Madrid’s Universidad Autónoma.

After 2 productive years at the Dunn School, Dr Recio has now been awarded a Juan de la Cierva-training Postdoctoral Fellowship funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. This will allow Dr Recio to return to Spain in spring 2018 and work for 2 years at the Department of Pharmacology of the Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where she will focus on finding new drug targets for diabetes.

On one hand, I feel very happy because this postdoc position gives me the chance of carrying on with my scientific career in Spain and set up the basis of my future own research line. On the other hand, it means leaving Oxford and the Dunn School, which is sad for me considering how enriching it has been for me to work in such a privileged environment” Dr Carlota Recio said.

When asked about Dr Recio’s contributions to his lab’s research, Professor Greaves said: “Carlota is a very gifted experimentalist. She has developed a really interesting story around the GPR84 receptor and its role in macrophage biology”. In addition to her research, whilst at the Dunn School, Dr Recio has been involved in undergraduate BM Pathology teaching and supervision of students in the lab.
