Twenty students have joined the institute, thirteen of which are funded by the Departmental Prize Studentship as well as individual scholarships. The remaining seven students are on structured DPhil programmes and have returned to the department after a year of lab rotations. The new students come from across the world, reflecting the international community here at the Dunn School; the countries represented in the group include China, New Zealand and Brazil, as well as countries of the European Union. Jana Terenova, who is starting her DPhil in Monika Gullerova’s lab, expressed her feelings upon joining the department by saying “I am thrilled to be part of the Dunn School community and I am eager to work alongside inspiring scientists.”
The students have been paired with second year DPhil students who will act as ‘buddies’ to the new arrivals to help them settle in. There are several induction events for them to look forward to, including tea with their buddies, a tour of the department, and the upcoming graduate student party. Many of these have been organised by the Graduate Student Association (GSA). The GSA is also active throughout the year, putting on events that are open to any member of the department. These include board games nights, career seminars and, new this year, film night.
In addition to their student representatives, the new graduates will be supported by Lucinda Risius, the Graduate Studies Administrator, and Anton van der Merwe, the Dunn School’s Director of Graduate Studies.
