New graduate students welcomed to the Dunn School
A total of seventeen students have joined the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology in October to commence their DPhil studies for the 2018-19 academic year.
Thirteen students have been admitted through the annual Departmental Prize Studentship competition and individual scholarships offered by funding agencies such as Cancer Research UK and the Royal Society. The remaining students are enrolled through separate Oxford DPhil programmes sponsored by the BBSRC, EPSRC, British Heart Foundation, or the Wellcome Trust. These students chose to remain in the Dunn School after a twelve-week rotation with one of the research groups here, as part of their programmes.
Half of this year’s students are non-UK citizens, coming from different parts of the world, including other countries within the EU, Singapore, China and the US. In addition to the generous departmental funding, many students are fully or partially sponsored by other agencies such as the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore, the China Scholarship Council and the Rhodes Trust.
Before the new students joined their labs in early October, each of them was assigned to a “PhD buddy”, a 2nd-year DPhil student who the newcomers can contact for advice as they get started in the department. As part of the induction, the Graduate Student Association (GSA) organised a welcome party and a Buddy Tea for the students, giving them the opportunity to get to know each other, as well as other DPhil students in the department. The GSA organises a wide variety of social and academic activities throughout the academic year, ranging from board games nights to career talks. These events are also open to the entire departmental community.
DPhil students of the Dunn School are constantly supported by Lucinda Risius, the Graduate Studies Administrator, and Professor Anton van der Merwe, the Director of Graduate Studies of the department.
