When Pegasus met Penicillin – Dunn School workshop for local primary school hailed as “brilliant success”

A “brilliant success” was the feedback on an interactive workshop about penicillin held for school children from the Pegasus Primary School at the Dunn School on Wednesday 22 February. 


The “Penicillin, from mould to medicines” workshop, sponsored by the Wellcome Trust and British Pharmacological Society and supported by the Bodleian Library, was part of a series of events to mark the 75th anniversary of the use of penicillin in man.


Pegasus School Assistant Head, Charlie Pitt said: “I thought it was a brilliant success, the children learnt lots and some are now thinking about a career in science! It really was one of the best educational trips I have ever been on due to the fantastic preparation.” 


Group Leader, Chris Tang hosted the event and said: “It was a pleasure to open the doors of the Dunn School to the youngsters – they were lively, interested and engaged. At the end lots nodded their heads enthusiastically when asked if they’d like a job in science when they grew up, it’s great to know we’re inspiring the young scientists of the future.”


To learn about penicillin work sheets were completed and apparatus used at three workstations by two groups of 30, year five children. 


Lab colleagues Lindsay Stimson and Rachel Exley worked closely with Chris in planning and delivering the event with on the day support from six volunteers drawn from the Dunn School’s postdoc and graduate student community.
