Gull lab alumnus secures EMBO grant for Prague research group

Former Gull Lab Post-doc Vladimír Varga has secured a grant to support setting up his laboratory in the Czech Republic, EMBO announced on 12 December 2016.

The EMBO Installation Grant will assist Vladimír as he continues to establish his independent research group at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the ASCR in Prague.

Professor Gull has fully supported Vladimir’s transition to independent status enabling him to work part time at the Dunn School from January to Spring 2016 before leaving the department to be fully based in the Czech capital.

Vladimír said: “I am very grateful to the Gull lab and other members of the department for their support while at the Dunn School and during establishing my research group in Prague.”

EMBO Installation Grants aim to strengthen science in participating member states – The Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Portugal and Turkey participated in the 2016 call.

Commenting on the award Vladimír said: “As there is just a single EMBO Installation Grant awarded each year in the Czech Republic I feel truly honoured. It is a great grant- the funding is very flexible, which is particularly important during this setting up period, plus the vast networking opportunities mean it will be easy to stay in contact with our international colleagues.”

Vladimír’s lab is employing cell biology and biochemistry approaches to study how eukaryotic cells build the flagellum/cilium, a complex and highly organised organelle.
