Ebola Medal awarded to former Dunn School visiting researcher, Marian Killip

A medal in recognition of bravery and dedication in tackling the Ebola crisis in West Africa has been awarded to former Dunn School visiting researcher Marian Killip following her five-week deployment to the region from 16 December 2014 to 21 January 2015.

Marian’s deployment over the Christmas and New Year period saw her work tirelessly in a highly dangerous environment in a bid to save lives, earning her the award from the UK government.

Professor Matthew Freeman, Head of the Dunn School of Pathology, said: “Marian undertook her deployment whilst a member of the department and we are immensely proud of her. She sacrificed the comfort of Christmas holidays at home, and risked her personal safety, to travel to West Africa and work flat out to combat the disease.’’

Speaking at the launch of the medal back in June 2015 Prime Minister, David Cameron, said:  ‘’The Ebola outbreak was one of the most devastating epidemics of our generation but we managed to stop its spread thanks to the hard work of British people who travelled to West Africa.’’

The UK government plans to issue the Ebola Medal to over 3,000 military and civilian personnel who travelled from the UK to the region to contain the spread of the disease.
