The Lulla group studies the replication and pathogenicity of intestinal RNA viruses, in particular enteric viruses such as picornaviruses and astroviruses. These viruses can also infect cells of the central nervous system, causing encephalitis, meningitis, and other complications. The group aims to elucidate host-pathogen interactions and uncover the molecular processes underlying different stages of infection; identify tissue-specific regulation of viral protein synthesis and specialised CNS host responses; and uncover the roles of viral RNA structures in virus replication and neurovirulence.
This work will enhance our understanding of tissue-specific properties of clinically important pathogens, advancing the development of therapeutics and vaccines, and informing public health measures.

Valeria Lulla completed her master’s and PhD at the University of Tartu in Estonia, followed by postdocs in Estonia, the USA, London and Cambridge. She established her independent group in 2021, supported by a Royal Society and Wellcome Trust Henry Dale Fellowship in the Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge. She is currently a Wellcome Trust Career Development Award Fellow in the same department. The Lulla group will be joining the Dunn School in July 2027 and Valeria’s post will be held in association with Lincoln College.
