Support the Centenary Campaign

Centenary Scholarship Endowment Campaign

In 1927, the Dunn School was founded with the help of a philanthropic gift on behalf of Sir William Dunn. Over our 100-year history, the Dunn school has supported and trained thousands of students, whose talent, enthusiasm and work have fuelled world-changing scientific discoveries.

To mark its centenary the Dunn School is seeking to establish the Centenary Scholarship Endowment, an expendable endowment the income from which will be used to fund one or more graduate scholarships at the Dunn School. By giving to this campaign, you will enable us to empower students and launch their careers for generations to come.

Thanks to the generosity of the Edward Penley Abraham Research Fund, the first £850,000 given to this endowment will be matched 2:1. A gift of £100 becomes £300 to support students at the Dunn School. Gifts of any size are greatly valued and appreciated.

Why a scholarship?

Students are at the heart of the Dunn School’s research excellence. They bring fresh perspectives, energy and enthusiasm that drive scientific research forward. As future researchers, innovators and leaders, their work will help tackle the defining challenges of our time.

Yet the cost of graduate study is a significant barrier for many talented individuals who wish to fulfil their academic potential at Oxford. Whilst the University awards multiple scholarships each year the demonstrated financial need continues to outpace available funding. As this disproportionately affects students from under-represented and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the Dunn School intends to give priority to students from these backgrounds in order to help remove financial barriers, in alignment with the School’s commitment to promoting equality of opportunity for all students.

Philanthropic support for graduate studentships is central to driving discovery into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human health and disease now and in the future.

Why an endowment?

All gifts to this campaign will be accepted as expendable endowment and, as such, will be invested to generate both an income stream and capital growth. The income stream will be used to fund scholarships, while the capital growth protects the value of that income stream.

Endowing scholarship funding ensures that future generations of outstanding researchers can pursue discovery long into the future. This increases opportunities for innovative breakthroughs in medical sciences that will be felt for generations to come. An endowed scholarship ensures your generosity will continue to shape students’ lives for generations to come.

What is it like to be a student at the Dunn School today?

Our DPhil Programme in Molecular Cell Biology in Health and Disease currently admits up to 18 students each year from all over the world. Each student receives 4 years of hands-on research experience, comprehensive training and a wide range of opportunities to develop their talent and become the future leaders in their field of choice.

We attract the highest number of applicants for DPhil programmes across the Medical Sciences Division at the University, due to our outstanding supervision and reputation paired with consistently positive feedback from students. With such exceptional demand, funding remains the main limitation, making an endowed studentship truly transformative.

Donation Matching

Thanks to the exceptional generosity of the Trustees of the Edward Penley Abraham Research Fund, the first £850,000 given to this campaign will be matched 2:1. For example, a gift of £100 will be converted into £300 towards our endowed studentship funding at the Dunn School. All gifts, big and small, are deeply appreciated.
