Chinese scrolls
The first scroll
The side note says: “Dr. Sanders was commissioned by the Sino-British Science Cooperation Bureau to lecture at the Guizhou Military Medical School. His knowledge is renowned both in China and abroad, and the Chinese Literary and Art Association has shown particular support. At the request of my friends Yang Zhibai and Chen Bokang, I have written this as a gift.

The main scroll is in an unusual script, which in mandarin would read as: 秦篆相承，颇增损大篆，而小篆画如铁石，宛转飞动，其源出于楷隶祖焉。
In English, we believe it says: “The Qin seal script was inherited with considerable additions and deletions to the large seal script, while the small seal script was as sharp as iron and stone, flowing and graceful. It originated from the ancestor of regular script and clerical script.”
The second scroll
“In July 1945, Dr. Zhang Da, the Dean of the Army Medical School, invited Dr. Sanders, a physician from Oxford University, and Dr. Picken (Lawrence Picken), a biologist from Cambridge University, from Chongqing to Anshun (There was a cholera outbreak in Anshun in 1942-43), both affiliated with the Sino-British Science Cooperation Bureau, to present the latest medical advances and screen a film on the invention and treatment of the new drug Penicillin. This presentation was highly and widely praised by faculty, students, and the public.
The two doctors’ visit to China has been a profound inspiration and encouragement to our social development and academic atmosphere. A year ago, I witnessed the miraculous effects of Penicillin in the India-Burma war area, and it is one of the greatest contributions of modern medicine to mankind. Now, I have a glimpse of the full picture. How fortunate I am to recall the numerous scientific discoveries of our ancient sages, and now, with the strenuous assistance of scientists from allied countries, our joint efforts and cooperation have been mutually beneficial. I hereby acknowledge the letters of instruction from Professors Li Zhenpian and Tang Hanzhi of the school.
The two professors are grateful for the hard work and profound significance of this trip. As a mere soldier with no academic experience, I offer a few words of encouragement to express my respect.
