Covid may be dominating the news headlines but the Dunn School’s Green Group has been actively promoting sustainability issues during its climate awareness week, 21 – 25 September 2020.
The week aims to promote sustainable attitudes, encourage a change in habits and inform staff and students in the department about sustainable tools and practices.
The Dunn School Green Group is a voluntary group of student and staff activists from across the Dunn School community. Green Group member, Graduate student Sophia Fochler, said: “The Green Group has a simple aim to encourage the scientists and support staff of the beloved Dunn School to be more conscious of our carbon impact and to develop more sustainable attitudes and habits”
Scheduling of the week coincides with Climate Week NYC where global leaders are meeting to discuss climate action plans during the biggest climate summit this year. And global and national awareness days also taking place this week, underpin some of the themes.

The pinnacle of the week will be on Friday, when the group promote LEAF – the Lab Efficiency Assessment Framework. The lab sustainability accreditation scheme developed by UCL is already being piloted in the Dunn School and the group are lobbying for its roll out department wide. In a departmental survey ran by the Green Group in July 2020, 90% of responders said they were slightly or very keen to be involved in LEAF so the group will be pushing for an opt out (rather than an opt in) model when they present the scheme to the departmental committee in October.
