On March 30th, the Biochemical Society announced that two Dunn School group leaders were recipients of the 2022 awards. The awards, announced annually, recognise eminent bioscientists and exceptional early career researchers.
This year, the Colworth Medal and the GlaxoSmithKline awards were awarded to Dr Tanmay Bharat and Dr Ivan Ahel, respectively. Beyond receiving a monetary prize, the two will have the opportunities to deliver a lecture at a Society conference or event, as well as the opportunity to submit an article to a Society-owned journal. In addition, Dr Ahel will receive a glass sculpture designed and produced by the sculptor Katharine Dowson.
The Head of the Department, Matthew Freeman, was extremely pleased to congratulate the award-winning pair in the department newsletter, saying, “Ivan’s ground-breaking work on ADP ribosylation is spectacular, both as fundamental cell and molecular biology but also because of its medical potential.” He also said, “It’s great to see recognition of Tanmay’s exceptional structural work that explores the nature of bacterial cell surfaces and how they interact with their environment.”
On hearing about the award, Dr Bharat said, “I am deeply honoured to receive the Colworth Medal of the Biochemical Society. The list of previous winners is impressive, and I am delighted to join such a prestigious group. This award will put the work of my laboratory in the spotlight, and give recognition to the research my colleagues and collaborators are performing.”
Dr. Ahel echoed the sentiment, saying, “I am honoured to be the recipient of the Biochemical Society’s GlaxoSmithKline Award. This award also recognizes the fantastic work of my laboratory members and collaborators, and greatly stimulates us to advance our research.”
The Biochemical Society was founded in 1911, and exists to advance molecular bioscience, promoting its importance and highlighting its role in positively effecting societal changes. Candidates for the annual awards are nominated by their peers, and the winners are agreed by a judging panel of respected scientists, across a range of different scientific backgrounds.
