Out and proud - Dunn School flies rainbow flag for LGBT+ History Month

Not even a global pandemic can stop the Dunn School celebrating LGBT+ History Month and the department is proudly flying the rainbow flag throughout February 2021.

The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Body, Mind, Spirit’.

Head of Department, Professor Matthew Freeman said: “Today marks the beginning of the UK's LGBT+ History Month and current restrictions will not stop the Dunn School from flying the Rainbow Flag. Of course a flag is itself not a major action, but we do apparently have the only flagpole in Oxford's Medical Sciences Division and it's nice to be able to use it to express our support for the cause of increasing visibility and promoting awareness of LGBT+ welfare issues.”

The national organisers of LGBT+ History month aim to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public by:

  • Increasing the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT+”) people, their history, lives and their experiences in the curriculum and culture of educational and other institutions, and the wider community;
  • Raising awareness and advancing education on matters affecting the LGBT+ community;
  • Working to make educational and other institutions safe spaces for all LGBT+ communities; and
  • Promoting the welfare of LGBT+ people, by ensuring that the education system recognises and enables LGBT+ people to achieve their full potential, so they contribute fully to society and lead fulfilled lives, thus benefiting society as a whole.
