Monika Gullerova praised in UK-Slovakia connections

Dunn School group leader, Dr Monika Gullerova, received an award for her outstanding contribution to 25 years of UK diplomatic relations with Slovakia at a ceremony hosted by the British Embassy in Bratislava on 22 August 2018.

Dr Monika Gullerova, an Associate Professor and Principal Investigator in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, was honoured in the presentations which mark a country celebrating its 25th anniversary of international ties. Slovakia is currently celebrating by highlighting Slovakians who have had significant positive contributions to Slovakia’s relations with other countries.

‘’I’m really honoured to receive this award. Now, in Brexit times, it is, more than ever, important to build positive relationships with countries in Europe” said Dr Monika Gullerova.

‘Dr Gullerova is a renowned expert who, thanks in no small part to her time at Oxford, contributed significantly to DNA research. She is an inspiration for many talented young people who want to make their career in science and research, and those that wish to study at a British University’, said British Ambassador Andy Garth, who presented the awards.

This advocacy of Slovakia in the UK, and vice versa, reminds us that there are over 100,000 Slovakians living in the UK, either working or studying. Individuals like Dr Gullerova, who grew up in Slovakia and emigrated to the UK, are ‘an exemplar of what is possible when talent, support and infrastructure co-mingle’ (British Embassy of Slovakia). The importance of international relations is also reflected in the diversity within the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology.
