The 2014 Dunn School Art prize has been jointly awarded to Emma Papworth and Julia Sklar at an unveiling of their winning pieces at the Dunn School on Friday 6 March 2015.

A sculptural deconstructed canvas created by Emma Papworth (The Queen’s College) a final year student at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art captured the panelists’ eye with its ability to convey microscopic cellular divisions.

Describing her work, Emma said: ‘I wanted the colours and amorphous, painterly surface to evoke the idea of fluids viewed under the microscope.’

Julia Sklar (St Hugh’s) is also in her final year at Ruskin. Her steel wire installation progresses from the abstract to the concrete morphing into the shape of a human face.

Commenting on the significance of her work, Julia said: ‘When read from top to bottom, the forms grow increasingly concrete. This evokes the manner in which the School’s pathologists condense complex information into a lucid history.’

The awards committee congratulated both artists on their ability to communicate the breadth and complexity of research undertaken at the Dunn School.

The winners receive £500 each in prize money.

The Dunn School Art Prize is a collaborative project with the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art.
