Dunn School Graduate Student Association celebrate careers day success

The Dunn School’s graduate student association (GSA) is celebrating the success of a medical sciences careers day they organised in Oxford on Friday 23 September 2016.

Around 150 graduates and postdocs from almost 20 departments and institutes across the University of Oxford found out about post PhD career paths in a series of talks and discussions at the event held in the Medical Sciences Teaching Centre.

Dunn School GSA member, Bernadeta Dadonaite said: “The GSA has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both attendees and the speakers. We hope to make the student-led Medical Sciences Careers Day a biennial event to serve as a platform for interaction between graduate students and postdocs from the Dunn School and other departments. It aims to be a useful resource for opening the doors to career paths that students may not have previously considered.”

Career talks included representatives from the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, consulting, medical writing, publishing, public engagement and science policy.

The Dunn School also featured up front as well as behind the scenes with Quentin Sattentau, Alberto Baena Lopez and Richard Wheeler sharing their experiences of handling the transition from PhD to postdoc in a panel discussion with Helen Thompson, senior grants adviser at the Wellcome Trust.

Rachel Bray an adviser from the university’s careers service said: “I thought the quality of contributions and discussions were very high, and it was good to hear some consistent, encouraging messages for everyone with respect to diverse opportunities available.”
