Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Cell Biology/Biochemistry
Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Cell Biology/Biochemistry
Grade 7: £33,309 - £40,927 p.a.
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant interested in studying mechanisms of ubiquitin-dependent degradation of membrane proteins in mammalian cells to join Professor Pedro Carvalho’s group based at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford.
The Carvalho lab studies the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the largest membrane-bound organelle in cells and central for the production of most lipids as well as membrane and secreted proteins. The ER also assembles the nuclear envelope, which separates nuclear and cytoplasmic events. A major interest of the lab has been to understand how these ER functions are regulated by ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis, in particular through ER-associated protein degradation (or ERAD). The studies on ERAD employ a combination of genetic, biochemical and proteomic tools both in yeast and mammalian cells. The Carvalho Lab also have regular access to on site cryo-EM instruments and collaborates with structural biologists to gain insights into the mechanisms of ERAD.
The post-holder will be responsible for carrying out a research project with limited supervision and contribute conceptually to the overall research programme. You should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD in molecular/cell biology or biochemistry. You should have a first author publication in high-profile scientific journals. The post holder should be enthusiastic and self-motivated scientist possessing experience in protein biochemistry, with the ability to work to a high standard. Previous laboratory experience, good organisational and communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team are essential. Experience in using mammalian cells to express and purify membrane proteins, assays to study protein ubiquitination and/or structural biology are strongly desired.
This is a fixed-term appointment available for 2 years in the first instance. If you are interested in this role, and have the skills and experience we are looking for, please apply online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.
For informal queries about this post please contact Pedro Carvalho via email: pedro.carvalho@path.ox.ac.uk.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on Friday 6 May 2022. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
